The AO Arena has welcomed over 30million guests and thousands of World-renowned artists since opening its doors in 1997. It has played a vital role in shaping Manchester’s music scene and has supported artists from back-rooms to main stage. With its £50million redevelopment, the new look AO Arena will attract more artists and for more fans, for many years to come.

The Role:

The role has two broad focus points: First to bring together the Health & Safety management of the AO Arena, supporting the venue team to follow a healthy and safe operation, controlling and updating documentation and recording accidents, incidents and near-misses. Second to take ownership of the Fire Safety Officer role on events, developing the function and integrating with the Events Management team in the operation of events.

Key Accountabilities:

• Support colleagues in enabling delivery of safe memorable experiences for customer and hirers of the AO Arena.
• Keep health and safety at the forefront of colleagues working practices by influencing colleagues in sensible, simple and relevant H&S management.
• Provision of task specific health and safety advice as required.
• Securing compliance and improvements, ensuring the venue fulfils its legal obligations under health and safety law.
• Co-ordinate and carry out regular site inspections and audits, providing feedback to relevant colleagues and working closely with the Corporate Lead on H&S .
• Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and complaints and lead the management and monitoring of the incident reporting system.
• Lead the incident statistical analysis and provision of trends and hot spots, investigating and guiding the relevant managers to mitigate against these trends.
• Identify safety training needs and work with the team to ensure programmes undertaken reflect the needs of the business and the delegates involved.
• Help maintain an effective risk assessment strategy/culture and via auditing ensure risk assessments are suitable and sufficient and up-to-date.
• Assist with development and running of safety promotions to raise awareness of health and safety issues across the venue.
• Development and management of H&S noticeboards across the venue.
• Coordinate and participate in the quarterly H&S meetings, assisting with agenda planning.
• Take the role of Fire Safety Officer for the majority of events and assist the Director of Operations in the formulation of clear guidance for this role.
• Assist with the H&S aspects of complaints and claims where appropriate.

Essential:
1 The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues within the venue and across the ASM group.
2 General computer literacy and the demonstrable ability to learn new programs and software applications.
3 Health & Safety background within a large venue / sports arena / entertainment arena or shopping centre (an organisation with a large foot-fall)
4 IOSH qualification, preferably within an events / entertainment setting and a willingness to work towards NEBOSH qualifications
5 Experience of building management systems, fire alarm systems, access control systems.
6 A good working knowledge of health and safety issues and the ability to apply these to the events environment from both a working and public safety perspective
7 Self-motivated with the ability to analyse, organise, report and solve problems
8 A demonstrable ability to operate effectively with a team as well as working on own initiative.
9 A good understanding of the Events Industry from a production and audience perspective.
10 A good working knowledge of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
Desirable:
1 Experience in working within the Events Industry in a similar role
2 Experience working with Estates / Building Services with understanding of CDM and workplace and site health and safety legislation
3 Knowledge and understanding of the Premises Licence as well as relevant local authority and industry regulations
4 Knowledge and understanding of venue security including knowledge of the Protect Duty
5 A general understanding of traffic management

Additional Points

Due to the nature of the role, you will be required to work weekends, evenings and public holidays.
The role may involve physical labour tasks including manual handling as well as working at height.
