Utilita Arena Newcastle is a purpose built, highly flexible entertainment venue with a capacity of up to around 11,400; located on the Banks of the Tyne adjacent to the Redheugh Bridge, it is within a 10 minute walk of Newcastle's Central Station and 20 minutes by taxi from Newcastle Airport. Conceived and built by Chas Chandler, ex-member of the 60's band The Animals ('House of the Rising Sun' was their most famous track) and his partner, Nigel Stanger, Newcastle Arena opened its doors for the first time in November 1995 with a concert by David Bowie.
Since then, it has hosted some of the finest world class entertainers to visit the region, including Tom Jones, Neil Diamond, Shirley Bassey, Kylie Minogue, Pavarotti, Sir Elton John and Sir Cliff Richard. Major sport events have also been represented including Davis Cup Tennis, Nations Cup Snooker and World Championship Boxing. The venue has also hosted many lavish top class shows including MAMMA MIA!, Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Disney on Ice and Les Misérables.
